Are tattoos bad?
I'm a fairly new believer in Christ and just recently started going to a youth group where there is a lot of talk about tattoos. on several occasions i've heard people talk about a verse in leviticus saying that it is wrong to "cut or tattoo one's self for the dead". does this justify people getting tattoos as long as it is not "for the dead" or depicting things associated with death?[skulls, demons, etc] and are tattoos really as bad many people say they are? I'm only asking about this because I'm considering getting tattoos and i have been told that getting tattoos of any sort will keep me from getting to heaven.I hope thats not true.

Having a tattoo will in no way keep you from going to heaven. Like pastor e said, the only thing that can keep you from heaven is not being saved. Whether it is wise or helpful to have a tattoo is a different matter, and since it's a fairly permanent decision, I would strongly advise you to put a serious amount of thought and prayer into it. Pray. Listen to solid Christians you trust. Read everything the Bible has to say about it. Pray more. Listen to what the Holy Spirit is telling you. Don't go against your conscience. Pray even more. But don't for a second think that your decision will have anything to do with whether or not you go to Heaven. |

While I agree with the assertion that the Levital law does not extend to modern application, we should consider our liberties versus God's desire. As followers we must always consider our actions in relation to our purpose. To reflect what God is like in through our actions. Paul addresses this very idea in several of his epistles but is very clear in 1 Corinthians 8. He implores the Corinthian church to not allow their freedoms in Christ become a stumbling block to those who are not followers. While tattoo's are widely accepted in our culture they can still serve as a hindrance to our personal witness for Christ. I think Paul sums it up when he says (my paraphrase), I don't want to do anything that might cause others to stumble. |

I had the same questions before getting my tattoo. I came to the conclusions that: 1) The Levitical Laws are for the nation of Israel and their worship of God. Unless you are a practicing jew living under the Mosaic Laws, they do not apply. 2) The Leviticus passage refers to tattoos in pagan worship. Tattoos should not represent false gods or anything unholy. 3) God may have tattoos. Isaiah 49:16 says "See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me." Some translations read "tattooed", and 4) Tattoos, themselves, can be addicting and become idols. So, what are you looking at for your first tattoo? |

A tattoo will not bar you from heaven. You could also say that it's a sin for women to cut their hair. There's a topic on here that deals with this somewhere. In short, tattoos aren't a sin. However, a naked girl tattoo, profanity, or "satan rocks" tattoos (though not a sin) would definitely dampen your witness. The only thing that keeps anyone from heaven is not being saved. Now that would take a while to unpack, but in short if you are in Christ, then Christ is in you. If you're not saved, then no heaven. Tattoos, piercings, high heels, long hair, long toenails, unbrushed teeth, nor bad clothes overtake the grace of God and the salvation He gives to us for His glory. |
