The three resources I wind up using with just about every couple are:

1: "Before You Say I Do" - this book pretty much guides our sessions

2: "Boundaries" by Henry Cloud. Excellent, especially for younger couples making transition to adulthood, or overbearing parents

3: "The Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey. Because so many divorces and marital problems start with money, I think this is essential to deal with.

I usually give a copy of TMMO (I buy in bulk, and give out for various reasons). I ask the couple to purchase the rest.

Several I would recommend. One is Dr. Gary Chapman's Five Love Languages. If you are looking to get certified in a practical method, I recommend Prepare and Enrich training (link below). It incorporates personality issues and marital expectations. Also, if you would like to send a couple somewhere that is free and worth the money, I recommend the We Vow Now program. Although it is not explicitly Christian, it is based on biblical principles and is actually based on the aforementioned Prepare & Enrich program. My wife and I did this program for free before our marriage and it was an excellent tool that really helped us talk about our expecations. P&E certification takes a little time and money but you can do it.

Not sure where you live so I don't know how practical my advice will be, but I use a resource from the Tennessee Baptist Convention. Dr. Tony Rankin (Christian Counsellor for the TBC and also has his own practice) had put together and in-depth pre-marital counseling notebook in order to assist pastors in meeting our states' requirements for pre-marital time allotment. It deals with money, sex, in-laws, the house, communication...all the biggies and does it completely from a Biblical standpoint. I love using it and there's also a take home section for the couple to work together on. You could try to get a hold of one by contacting the TBC headquarters at 800-558-2090, ext. 8136 or e-mail trankin@tnbaptist.org.
