Dealing with suicide
We had a youth take his life yesterday. I'm trying to think through a lot. I don't want this to sound selfish or uncompassionate, but I'm trying to think about the next step for the rest of our youth and families. When I was in H.S. a woman who helped with the youth group committed suicide. The church decided that the suicide should not be discussed at all so it was ignored and our leaders were not allowed to talk about it with us. I think what matters most is that the youth are allowed to talk about how they feel and that someone listens and offers insight when necessary. But, the most important thing is that they are allowed to ask questions and talk about suicide. Answered by lexieross 1 year ago

LISTEN, speak carefully, PRAY before you meet with them and do not be afraid to refer them to a professional Christian Counselor if you feel that is what is needed. Remind them that you may not have all the answers, but we can rest in the shadows of the Almighty and there we can find peace and rest for our weary hearts! Answered by Pastor Joe 1 year ago

The week I moved to my current church a kid in the community committed suicide who was a good friend of many youth group kids. What a start to a new ministry! Answered by Tim Sch... 1 year ago

Praying for you. Never an easy thing. We put together a "panel" and met with students in a large group session. Then gave opportunity to meet in smaller groups. Large group had three pastor's: our senior pastor, myself, and then a pastor from another church in town...answered a lot of questions (see brotherDoug's below). make a point to be present at local schools...that is always good. Be prepared for the question, 'Do suicides go to heaven'. I had two fathers commit suicide within 6 months of coming to my church. They weren't really connected to the youth ministry, but I had students who knew the children of the fathers. Let the students grieve and have people there to help them through it.
