Thumbs up Thumbs down

We use the book for our Sophomore Small Group curriculum for the 1st semester. I have discussion questions for each chapter that the leaders guide the group through. It is just 1 chapter a week...so not too much reading for the students. We have been doing this for two years now...so far so good.

We did a retreat based on the book, and then an Elective (a short-term topical small group).

Both worked great thematically, but we really struggled to get the students to do the reading during the elective. We went for 2 chapters a week.

If I were to do it over again, I would make the reading an added bonus and instead of having a book-discussion group, I would plan activities based on what each chapter is talking about. That way, if you do the reading it makes perfect sense. And if you don't read, you still get the experience.
