Pastor Joe

I teach Sunday School. I would like to be in a class, but often we get students that only come on Sunday morning and in the worship service is not enough time to connect with them. SO I enjoy having the class on Sunday morning as well.

Often I will take a quarter off and teach an adult class and get someone else to take my class.

If your pastor is on board and you have someone to teach the youth so you and your wife and grow together with other believers...GO FOR IT. I would say that there are an abundance of youth pastors whom would love to be in an adult class consistently. You have to stand up for this decision!

I teach our high school guys class basically because at some point we needed a teacher and I was the option. I now have a co-facilitator who can lead by himself if I am needed elsewhere on Sun. morning. Sunday mornings are the only times that I see some students so I feel a need to be there participating with them. I also kind of find it hard to justify not spending time with the students when that is my role at the church.

I also see the value of having adult relationships and opportunities to grow. My wife and I host a weeknight adult small group. We also try to do lunch after church with our peers rather than the students. That time is more valuable to me than sitting in a class.

Brandon...

I actually asked about this when i came to my current church (9 months ago). My wife and I find it's a necessity for us to be plugged into a small group of people our own age. Sometimes it's a little weird, because I always arrive late (from hanging with students before their small groups start), but its incredible. Plus, students need to hear from other adults besides me all the time. I figure that I can't help students on their faith journey if I'm not equipping myself. It's also a personal preference for me to "not ask students to do something I wont/dont do," so I use it as a teaching point too. Do whatever you can to have the small group relationship with other adults. Your student ministry will thank you

I get fed other points through the week as well, I have others teach the classes but I rotate between what class I go to, because this is a time when we do have visitors and I want to meet them. The kids love it the week I am in their classes, though I sometimes feel like im a distraction to the teachers.

I have a lay leader teaching our Sunday school classes. He does a great job and it allows me to free up my mind a bit as I teach on Sunday night at our youth worship service. However, my wife and I have found that it is really great for us to still be a part of the class. It creates a really nice environment for some relationship building. The pressure of teaching for an hour is gone and the time leading up to Sunday school is full of opportunities to check in on kids weeks and touch first timers. We too jump in on the parties of the young married SS class. They are very accepting and it has created a good pool of people to be youth sponsors.

I do a lot of teaching on Sunday mornings. But we also don't have much in the way of adult Sunday school in our church. I think it is pretty clear that my job is to pastor the youth, and so that is where I should be Sunday morning. The senior pastor or worship pastor wouldn't consider doing something different on Sunday mornings... it's what we're there for.
It is VERY important to get fed. My wife and I are in small group of peers and we spend a lot of time during the week with Christian friends who help build and grow us. That's important.
Finding places outside of Sunday morning that you can get fed is a necessary survival skill for pastors. God has a different role for us to play on Sunday mornings than the rest of the church.

I say get feed. Equip the saints.

I make sure my wife and I attend a adult small group and sit in a service. Our teenagers have small group but I don't teach those. Its important for me to let others build relationships with teenagers not just me. I'm assuming that you teach the kids at a different time?

It'd be nice if I were in a Young adult class, but I teach 9-12. We do go to all the young adult parties, bible studies, etc. Just not Sunday School.
