I have done dual ministries in the past and unless you want burn out and to be a part from your family it always seems that one ministries suffers or they suffer equally. The gift of delegation seems to be the only way around no burn out and being away from your family a lot.

Currently I am just the Student Ministries Pastor and I find that ministry to fill my time easy enough. I was fortunate enough that the pastor gave me the option to be student's only or choose to add another ministry if i desired.

It is possible that I will be moving into a dual role. I wrote out estimates of my hour allocations and submitted that to the board, and fully plan on sticking to that very strongly. I think the key in doing something like that is moving from a do-er to a trainer/equipper. The more roles you have, the less you can do. You have to move to being a point person, equipping others, and letting them do the actual work of the ministry. Your overall job role has to change.

in may i upped my hours to do both youth and young adults.
although it works on paper, often times its the YA group that gets less emphasis.
for this past year, it worked because I have been working along side of our lead pastor for YA. I think if i were to manage both on my own, i'd be toasted for the first part.

Dual roles would be a dream come true! I am right now the Assistant Pastor, Sunday School Administrator, Media Tech, Youth Pastor, Children's Pastor, and Music Leader. I feel like all of them suffer to an extent. There are only so many hours in the day. I draw myself a diagram each week and try to place where I have given the most emphasis, and what is the most lacking. For the sake of my family, I am strict on my Mondays off, but I usually take one day a week for my different pastoral roles. One for children's ministries, one for music, one for assistant responsibilities, one for youth, and one for media and design work. Doesn't always pan out, but that's the plan.
