Getting PreTeens to worship
I was looking for ideas on how to get our 5th and 6th graders to understand worship. Trying to come up with ideas that may not involve actually singing but listening to the worship music and doing something. Any ideas or thoughts. Love these crazy PreTeens.

We got together with our Worship Pastor and started a special Worship Night recently. First, we had our WP come in as a guest speaker and talk about much of what Chandis said below. Then we had another night where we decked out the facility with candles, curtains, etc. and made an intimate worship night. We had prayer stations, tithing, etc. and made the night a worship experience. It was hugely successful! I think getting the younger kids to open up to worship involves to parts. 1- they need to understand what worship and praise are and why we do them as followers. 2- they need to experience it to see it’s not a monotonous thing you do Sundays, but an powerful and enjoyable experience with God. |

Singing is specifically praise, but only a small percentage of worship. If you want them to react to music, put on a song that they like and can dance to, but if you want them to truly praise God (no matter what the circumstance) then it has to start with understanding that worship is much much bigger (Romans 12:1-2). Praise is a result of not a means to. We praise God because we understand who He is and are living obediently to His Word. Help them understand how to glorify God in their daily life (spread the gospel and encourage, exhort, and edify the body of Christ), and praise will result. It starts with obedience, not an emotional connection to a song or anything else. I hope this is encouraging and helpful. |

You could try having them listen to a certain worship song with their eyes closed and with a notepad and pen(markers, crayons, whatever). Have them just draw to the music. If you have a large group have them share with 2-3 others around them what they felt through the song and their drawing. You could also use movements or painting to help them connect with the emotions of the songs. Maybe do a lesson or 2 on what worship means to YOU. Or have other leaders(adults and older students) share about their experiences. |
