The church I'm serving in now is in the same community as the church I served in 4 years before, with a break to go to Seminary in between. I haven't really noticed any issues because of this - especially since many of the teens I'd had relationships with had already graduated, and the others had plenty of time to develop a relationship with the new youth pastor. I've also seen this happen many times. In several situations it wasn't a big deal at all. In a few situations it was a bit awkward at first, but eventually proved to be no big deal. That's just my personal experience so take it for what it's worth. I think it also depends heavily on how big the community is. I'd guess the impact would be greater in a small town v. a large city.

I have done so in most every community in which I've served however I have a very ecumenical and collaborative philosophy of ministry. This allows me to focus not only on my duties but also on the overall efficacy, vitality and activity of the Church in the Community. This attitude and skill is the most challenging and essential aspect of such endeavors, being difficult to cultivate in ones self and even more difficult throughout the community, leadership, clergy and staff.
