How do I deal with job rejection?
I'm currently in my second year of work as part of two person youth ministry team. I applied for the higher paid position when the other worker left on 1 year of maternity leave. Since working at this church we have gone through 5 different youth workers and a lot of the time I have carried a lot of the work load alone. I was turned down for this position and given the reason that I need more schooling. The new hire does not have a degree, or school in youth ministry (I have 3 years of college in social work) and has less work experience in youth ministry. I'm feeling hurt, angry, resentful and rejected, I've thought about quitting but I don't want to leave the kids and youth I work with. I don't know what God is saying in all this..

Ministry is tough because on one side we have our responsibilities to disciple students and on the other side we have all kinds of organizational and office politics issues. I have fallen in the trap of letting my frustrations with the organization negatively affect my ministry responsibilities. The trick for me is to put more focus on the ministry stuff and try to leave the other stuff on the side. It's hard to do, but when I remind myself why I am there, it is much easier to just trust that God has a plan and try to be obedient to the calling that God has given me which is to minister to these students despite my position or how annoyed I am with leadership. |

I've been there. And trust me those hurt, angry, resentful, rejected feelings will quickly turn to bitterness if you don't deal with them. By the looks of things for whatever reason that other job is not something you're going to be given a shot at any time soon. If that's something you can deal with, great stay where you are. But if that's something that will lead to bitterness then it's not going to help the kids you're working with for you to stay because they WILL catch on. Maybe it's time to pursue the rest of your degree (or a ministry degree) or move on to a different position? |
