How do you KNOW you are in the will of God?
My husband and I moved from our home and ministry in Louisiana to the mission field. The initial movement came when we KNEW God was calling us to plant a church that would reach EVERYONE in a town where the churches on every corner only wanted to do inward ministry. No outreach what so ever. Only problem: we didn't know where to start. After talking to a former pastor, he suggested we move to a place and get experience doing just that where the work has already been started. But we are both MISERABLE here. Our hearts are back in Louisiana but we commited to a year on the mission field. We are doing a great work here but our hearts are still there. So what do we do? Go back home or stick it out through the misery? How to know God's will?

I used to think the will of God for my life was a straight line, much like the Fidelity investment commercials. But the longer I serve and do ministry, the more I think it's like an umbrella than a line. God won't ask you to do anything against his nature as revealed in Scripture (Like PastorE said). But I think we can serve God any where we are, it's just frustrating when service doesn't bring gratification, so we often try to find other places to serve that are more fulfilling. I don't necessarily think we will be out of God's will by choosing to serve in Place B over Place A. I do think God will give us clues as to what will be the best fit for us, though. He does great things when we are miserable. Keep your 1 year commitment to him.

There are three stages of knowing and doing the revealed will of God. 1) God’s will is revealed with final, decisive authority only in the Bible (2 Tim. 3:16). 2) Application of the biblical truth to new situations that may or may not be explicitly addressed in the Bible. We need a mind that is so shaped and so governed by the revealed will of God in the Bible, that we see and assess all relevant factors with the mind of Christ, and discern what God is calling us to do. 3) Living where there is no conscious reflection before we act. Because God commands things like: Don’t be angry, proud, covet, anxious, jealous, envy and none of those actions are premeditated. Immerse yourself in the written Word of God. And pray that the Spirit of Christ would make you so new that the spillover would be good, acceptable, and perfect—the will of God. |
