How do you become better at speaking with no notes?
I like to have notes, but I know it takes away from the message when you rely on them.

I think it only detracts from the message if they distract you and are constantly interrupting your thought and speech patterns. Using or not using notes when speaking is a personal preference. Even major public speakers and figures use notes but the point is that they have perfected the art of moving from one thought to the next without interruption. |

I NEVER speak with out notes. I do read over them again, again and again until I feel comfortable enough that I just use them as a crutch and to keep me on track. Now I never get to the point that I don't look down from time to time but don't fell that that is too distracting. |

I do a couple things when I prepare a message, that help me to stay away from my notes. The first thing is to break the message into 5 or 6 little segments, or modules. The key to this is to be very clear about the purpose and the point to each module. Then all you need to remember is the order of the modules. |

Memorization. The danger of memorization for some is just reciting what you've memorized and losing the emotion. The goal is not necessarily to memorize word for word, but to go over it so many times that you no longer need to read it. |

i know some people like john piper that have an entire sermon typed out and hardly ever look down at the notes. i use a simple outline and put other verses and quotes from outside the text on my notes. if you're looking down the whole time then it looks like you're unprepared. go through your notes, rewrite them, rewrite, rewrite, condensing doen each time. try to narrow it further each time til you can fit it on an index card. that works for me |

I hate to sound cliche but it really is about practice. Another thing that helps is having a specific outline with a few simple points. I guess its hard to answer this question without knowing your context. Are you preaching? Leading a small group? I don't know many preachers who don't use notes, but I do know some who have perfected the art of using notes. |
