How do you work with a female senior pastor?
In July our senior pastor is leaving and the new SP is a single female. I'm the youth guy and I'm single. Thus, I'm freaking out a little. I've never worked with a female SP, this is the first female SP for this church, and I don't know the logistics of how we'll be able to work together and have meetings without having "chaperones". And I'm not saying the church won't trust us, I'm saying that I don't trust us! Single, married, whatever, I don't want to EVER be in a situation where somebody would think something weird's going on. But with a part-time secretary there's gonna be times when it's just me and the SP in the church offices alone. I plan on asking other church leadership what the proper protocol is, but what do you guys think?

I don't work with a female SP, but I do work with two secretaries who are female. There are many times where it is just one of them and I alone in the office. They are both married and both several years older than I am (one has a daughter who was my friend in high school). We just all have an awareness of being appropriate. It would seem that would need to be the case with you and your SP. If you are on staff, I find it hard to believe you are the only 2 staffers. I would avoid "lunch dates" and stuff that would give the appearance of something going on. Just let her know how you feel and be aware of the situations you are in. I do agree with comments below, though, you can't be too careful. |

Our senior pastors are a married couple, and the female is my line manager. We've never had an issue with appropriateness (possibly the age gap, one of her sons is older than me) but I do see the need to be careful. Thanks for the input! I just know that Billy Graham's philosophy is to not ever be alone with a woman who's not family, ever, period. I heard a youth speaker named Clayton King say that he won't ride in an elevator or a car alone with a woman, no matter the age difference. If you're never in that situation, nobody can say you're doing something wrong. |

I would say, if it makes you uncomfortable to be in that type of situation, get out of it. Simple as that. A woman shouldn't be a senior Pastor in the first place. |
