How long does message prep take you
How long does it take you to write/prepare for the average message you give to your High School or Middle School group. And, with that amount of prep time, how long is the time that you wind up speaking?

I have done this different ways over the years. From four/five clipboards on my wall (signifying four/five messages a month), to outlines, to the panic button method of pulling out something I have taught before because we all get in a pinch every now and then. The clipboards was the most indepth, I would have four messages in the works at any given time...themes, or series, topics, etc. I am easily distracted and get bored. So when I would have thoughts on one I would work a while, then ideas for other would come up and so I would write notes, illustrations, etc and clip in the mix. then prep time wouldn't be so hassled. now you can do this with computer/easier. ha. 2-3 hrs. with the extras..vids,illus,etc.

I usually take about 6-8 hours on a 35 min lesson but that doesn't include all the time I spend thinking about it throughout the week. Some of that time also includes finding graphics, videos or illustrations. |

Ideally I like to sped about 6-8 hours, but only end up at 4 most weeks. |

It varies greatly, depending on how in control of my schedule I am. Sometimes I plan to dedicate 6 hours, and I only end up getting 1 1/2! Usually, a 30 minute message takes me about 5-6 hours if I am starting from scratch. I would take longer if I had it, though. It seems like an unlimited task if you allow it to be. |

I spend about 4-5 hours in one block of time (or one day) getting the outline for my message. Then through out the rest of the week i let it run through my mind and continue to add stuff to it and the LORD lays things on my mind and then do final prep the night before and finalize it. And I do a quick overview again before I preach it. |

This depends completely on the text or topic. If it is a text or topic I am very familiar with and have taught on many times it does not take much time at all. I just need to figure out a couple of illustrations. If it is something I am not as familiar with it may take me 5 hours. |

My actual "sit down and put this thing on paper" time is an hour or two. However, all during the week I am thinking through elements of a lesson. |
