Two sides here, yes the worship band can stretch and learn a new some from time to time and as one who worships, if our hearts are focused on the cross and we remember that Christ is our audience of one (we are not worshiping for anyone else but HIM) then can a song really be sang too often. I love to worship HIM and have some favorite songs, and I like to learn new ones but always enjoy worshiping to the familiar ones.

I don't think it's too bold a statement to say they can learn a new song per month. I think that's realistic and over time you'll sing the same songs but it's all in the packaging. You could help them out by telling them which song you want them to know and by when so that it can tailor fit into your lesson or sermon.

If you're working with a youth band, to play a song only 4 or 5 times makes things really hard on the band. These are teens. They are young and don't quite have the skill to add a whole new sleight of songs every week. We try to add 2 new songs a month or so. So we end up doing a lot of songs that we've been doing for a while. Some of our musicians could learn faster, but some are doing well just to keep up with the current pace. I know ruts aren't good, but having some familiar stuff the kids learn to enjoy is okay. How often do you rehearse? We rehearse on Sunday afternoons for an hour before youth group starts. I have an e-book on youth worship bands if you'd like to look at it. Link below. God bless your ministry.
