If I want to go into youth ministry, what classes should I take as a high school student?
I am a high school sophomore seriously looking into youth ministry, and I was wondering what kind of classes I should try to sign up for to help me in college and beyond.

I agree with the last two guys about talking with your pastors and studying the Word. However, some practical things for you... |

I agree with Charlie about being involved in your own church. I also agree with pastor e. If you haven't told your youth pastor or pastor about this desire, talk to them. They may have some extra responsibilities that can help you prepare. I was able to teach Jr. Church, preach in some services, and was involved in other ministries. I also would say, read your Bible. Get to know it. Spend time with God and in His Word. It's about a relationship with Him. As for college, I would say to pray about it. I think getting a degree in counseling is helpful. I took a route where I studied Greek and went on a one year mission trip to Ecuador. Keep doing ministry where you are and growing there. God will guide you to the next step. Mt 6:33. |

I think it's awesome that you're already thinking ahead into your journey in ministry. One thing I'd say is just enjoy your time in your own youth group right now. There's a time to prepare yourself for a full time position, but while you're young, continue to invest in your own youth ministry at your church. Also, I have a friend who says that "students make the best youth ministers," and I agree with him. Use this time to stretch yourself and really exercise some of your spiritual gifts. Spend as much time in prayer and study as you can to truly see if this is where God is leading you. |

I don't want to sound brash or anything, but youth ministry is not a job, it's a calling. Is this a decision that you've made or has it been a burden on your heart that God has laid there through scripture, prayer, and reflection? If you go into it as a job, you'll burn out real quickly. I think you should talk with your pastor and youth pastor about this as well as any mentors you may have. In high school, just take what you'd normally take and do the best you can in them. I've been preaching since I was your age and been on staff at a church for 9 years now. However, 7 of those were bivocational meaning I had another job. Matt: 6:34 "So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own" |
