There are some good comments below, so I'll just add one thing. Have you talked to your pastor about this or is there a church board of some kind that you're working with/through? Maybe it would be helpful if you let them give you the title, or at least back it. That way it won't come across like you're self-promoting, but rather that you're working within a structure that the leadership of the church supports.

I completely agree with Justin that it's not about the title, that said, people often look to make sure the title is there as a type of reassurance, ie: You want your doctor to use the title "Doctor" because it conveys that he/she knows what they're doing.

I think you can give yourself whatever title you wish, as long as it's not being done as a way to give yourself authority or pump yourself up. "Ducky the supreme director of McAwesomeness" is probably going too far.

My personal opinion would be to stick with the director title, if you're part of an organization they might have their own structures in place regarding titles.

As always, it's not about the title, it's about following Christ and calling people to journey toward him.

Don't take this wrong, but do you need a title to be a leader? If you lead people just lead... Your authority doesn't come from a title. It comes from a willingness to take people on a journey, helping them to accomplish things they never thought possible on their own. I don't refer to myself as pastor although it's my title. When I sign my name, it's my name. Serve, love and sacrifice... People will follow even without a title. If you haven't read it already, pick up "You don't need a title to be a leader" by Mark Sanborn.
