Is it presumptuous to give yourself the title "Director" in a ministry you start?
I'm starting up a Women's ministry in my church. I already have a core team and have given each their respective area of leadership and their title. I am technically orchestrating it but isn't it presumptuous to give myself the title "Director" without being appointed? If so... how do I go about letting people know what my job is without a title?

There are some good comments below, so I'll just add one thing. Have you talked to your pastor about this or is there a church board of some kind that you're working with/through? Maybe it would be helpful if you let them give you the title, or at least back it. That way it won't come across like you're self-promoting, but rather that you're working within a structure that the leadership of the church supports. |

I completely agree with Justin that it's not about the title, that said, people often look to make sure the title is there as a type of reassurance, ie: You want your doctor to use the title "Doctor" because it conveys that he/she knows what they're doing. |

Don't take this wrong, but do you need a title to be a leader? If you lead people just lead... Your authority doesn't come from a title. It comes from a willingness to take people on a journey, helping them to accomplish things they never thought possible on their own. I don't refer to myself as pastor although it's my title. When I sign my name, it's my name. Serve, love and sacrifice... People will follow even without a title. If you haven't read it already, pick up "You don't need a title to be a leader" by Mark Sanborn. |
