Making stuff is very time consuming, plus most software that you can make quality videos with has a very steep learning curve. Although my favorite by far are Adobe products, I would almost always suggest that someone new to it try to exhaust other resources before sinking the time and money into learning something totally new.

One thought would be to check out a program called WAX. Wax is a FREEware/open-source video editing program that also allows you to perform 3d text animations etc. I think it's comparable to older versions of Sony Vegas, which is a popular editor. It's far more advanced than iMovie or Movie Maker, and yet... it's FREE.

I have a mac and use imovie... its a big upfront cost... but I believe its worth it... I have a student making highlight videos for each week that we play for the students to get them excited.... I recently started making Pre-sermon videos.... i found that its pretty easy (takes time) but they are alot of fun and I don't spend anymore money on them, as in, i don't pay 15 bucks for them... i make them or a student makes them...

Buying the videos is going to be WAY cheaper than producing them yourself. Things like the intro to Tim's videos were done, most likely, in After Effects, which runs about $1,000. It's hard to do good video graphics for cheap.
If you are just wanting to edit videos, there are a few good options. iMovie does well if you're on a Mac. Final Cut Express is even better (and costs more).
On a PC you can try Windows Movie Maker or something like Premiere Elements (again, costs more).
If all you want to do is make countdowns, there are some custom software options (links below). If you make 3 or 4 countdowns, you'll already have earned back what you would have spent @ WorshipHouse.
