I have struggled with this in the past. Actually, it was those struggles that have prepared me to be much more relational this summer. Last summer we tried to become a little more complex rather than relaxed which meant more time for me to need to be in the office rather than hanging out. This year we have designed things that are easy to plan.

The summer is packed with Kid's Camp, Teen Camp, VBS, Holiday's, county fair etc. I shut down the teaching program on Wed eve (these are the ones where we only meet 1 or 2 times a month due to the weeks of camp and VBS, so I do H20verflow (pool parties) the times we actually do not have a week of camp or something. Still a good time to connect with community, but if we were to have a regular bible study meeting it is hard to draw the students in after not meeting for 2 weeks or so. Hope this makes sense? I also do a fast food friday (once a month) where students are dropped off at the mall and we eat at the food court and then walk aroun

On Sunday evening we are hit and miss as well, but I keep my teaching going through out the summer.

I actually blogged about this last summer. Some loved my ideas, some flamed me for it. Decide for yourself.

The follow-up post linked at the end describes what our summer actually looks like.

we actually don't seem to have that much of an issue . yeah kids go on vacation and what not but our for some reason we have a harder time during the school year. I guess its the style of ministry we are doing that makes us the Youth minstry oddballs!

our kids get so bored in the summer they can't wait for us to be there!

The shift I struggle with is saying goodbye to students I've poured years into and hello to students I have no relationship with. That probably makes the transition to summer tricky too.

Part of what we've done is simplify our school year programming and focus more heavily on relationships there. That makes the switch a little easier on the staff.

Also, take a break in between. Maybe take the last week of May and first week of June and lay low while students finish school. A physical break helps you get mentally/spiritually prepared for the transition ahead.
