Should we have a big kick-off event in the fall?
We are getting ready to move into a new ministry space in the fall, and we've been talking about having a big kick-off event to our weekly Wednesday nights.
I struggle with it. On the one hand I think it is fun to celebrate and make a big deal out of youth group starting, on the other hand I am a firm believer that "what you do to get them there is what you'll have to do to keep them there."
I don't want week 1 to be epic, and have students stop showing up because weeks 2, 3, & 4 aren't as big. Thoughts?

I think you can get away with a celebration. We have cancelled 1 of our 2 weekly meetings for summer. When we start back up, we are probably going to do a swim party or something fun just so we can touch base with some of the kids whom we haven't seen since school let out (some of ours scatter like cockroaches in summer). So the different venue makes me feel like I can pull it off. Especially if you have a new facility, though, enjoy it, and celebrate! |

I agree with the others that have answered this question. I think there are certain times of the year that allow you to have a big celebration... beginning of summer, end of summer, etc. And especially moving into a new facility - that is awesome! Let us all know how it goes. |

yes absolutely. There is a certain amount of truth regarding what you do to get them is what you do to keep them, but it is not absolute. We should celebrate good things, have fun, and do things with excellence. |

I would agree with Brandon. Go big and make it special. If you advertise it as a big celebration of the new facility then people won't expect it the next week. We did the same thing when we rebuilt our student facility. We brought in a special music act and everything. I don't think any student expected us to do it again next week. Just be honest and you will be good. |

I say go big. There's always natural excitement that comes from the beginning of the school year. Throw on top of that the new youth space and you've could have a ton of excitement going on there. I say ride that horse until it cant go anymore... |
