We use an annual release and permission form and on that form we have a section where parents are asked if it will be okay to use pictures of their students from the events that they will attend that year.

Our internal policy is that we will use a lot of discretion in terms of what to put up and what to leave alone.

The only Law I'm aware of is the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998. However, most of it has been overturned by the Supreme Court.

We do not get any kind of permission to post pictures of students in our student area or online. Most of my kids know what whatever pictures are taken with the camera show up on the website.
I do honor students if they ask me to take down a picture but I have only had that happen 1 in 7 years of posting pics online.
As for names, the only time I put names and pics together is on Facebook and that is just with tagging. The students can untag the pic if they want.

Great Question! Our leadership team has wrestled with this one...

Solution for Event:
- Have a registration table where people write down their name, number & address (for a follow-up thank you card) then have a spot to the side where they can check the box if they don't want photos of themselves on the internet. If they don't check it use their photo.

Solution for Ministry:
- Have your parents fill out a general waiver/medical release form, so that their student can attend events and retreats that year with the youth ministry. Attached to this waiver have a place for parents to sign that give you permission to put pictures of them on the internet.

Hope this helps!

We try to get permission always before we post, not before we take.

Most parents who fear posting are just not educated, so we talk it through them what we will be using the picture for if they marked no on sharing pictures.

We never put names with pictures!
