you can run Cat-5 cable but you will need a sender and receiver (couple hundred dollars). Using Cat-5 gives you the ability to go longer than a standard VGA cable but you have to buy the sender and receiver.

I have used Logmein to control another pc before and it worked fairly well but we have a good size pc with great video capabilities. When you use logmein it takes computer resources so you need to make sure the machine in the booth is decent.

Couple thoughts:
-We have run 100ft of VGA with no signal degradation.
-If you are just advancing slides use this http://www.powerremote.com/ we have one and it is great, even in our sanctuary.
-If you have wifi buy an iPad and try using keynote. I have not used it but this might be a workable solution.
-We have a couple students working in the tech booth but you need an adult back there too...recruit a techie parent or college student. If you are the one reacting "should something come up" your probably spreading yourself thin...especially if your ministry is growing. Get that off your plate.

I would not attempt a remote desktop, too many variables. I know Tim's #4 suggestion seemed too simplistic but it is great. I understand it is hard to hold off on however the type of media you can deliver but it is what is best long term. Our teens now run almost all media at our church for every service.

A couple responses:

1. The best fool-proof way to do it is run some really long cords for the video and audio.

2. Remote desktop could work, but it rarely displays video very well on the client end, so if you're trying to fix video issues, that won't work very well.

3. Get a computer that runs well and won't give you any problems in the first place. (i.e. a Mac) ;)

4. The best solution is for you to recruit and train someone to fix it instead of you so you can continue on stage with minimal interruption. If there's no one you know who can do that, then if I were in your place, I'd start limiting the media stuff until someone is available.

I would first try something like a remote desktop connection from a computer in the sanctuary to the computer in the balcony. That way you don't have to alter or add connections to your existing setup, but add the convenience of having the machine close.
