I'm thinking through this right now as well. My method has been trying to share the responsibilities of the ministry with youth, trying to match up their gifts with something that needs to happen. This has worked well, in that some youth don't every follow through with anything, and some do extremely well with certain things.

I'm weary to use the term "youth leader", as I don't want youth to feel superior to others, however, this can be avoided with a good explanation of what a leader is.

I'm super interested in what this summer internship thing looks like, can you message me what you find out?

We try to develop our teens by getting them involved in ministry. I don't do any set intern plans, but we get the teen to work alongside an adult in an area they choose. For example, we have teens who are learning to lead Sunday school classes by partnering with the existing teacher, and slowly take on more responsibility. This has the benefit in helping the teens feel part of the whole church, and helps the adults to see things from a teen's perspective.

I personally have seen the best results with student leader training, when it's a one on one "come and help me do this" that turns into "give it a try and I'll help you be a leader"
