Preach on your passions.

Share your testimony.

Be yourself, let them see the real you. No need to impress.

I love sharing my testimony and sharing what God is telling me to do. I always give them time to ask questions to me and my wife. Meet and play with my kids. Buy em pizza or something.

I have always used my first sermon to talk about myself, my testimony and my vision for youth ministry. This lets the kids know who you are (and don't just say good things).

I think I have usually started with the basics of my story (testimony) and then gone from there as to what I think God is going to do in the this new place.

I would talk about a passage that is central to your life and ministry. The students are beginning the process of getting to know who you are, and being able to talk about something that is central to your life will allow them to do just that.

I like to use a sermon based on Peter and Andrew and how different their ministries are. How Andrew brought Peter to Christ, and how Peter since that become something great. I use it to describe the type of minister i am, and my goals in life as a minister also.

You could also use a verse that is kind of like your ministry goal.

I like to go with "Sinner In the Hands of an Angry God" JK

I start with something from Ephesians b/c it is written with a young church in mind. It is also easy to continue on in a series.

Something I have used twice now is Genesis 23, the burial of Sarah. The basic point of it is that Abraham had to bury Sarah to gain access to the promised land, and that often when God wants to take us to a new place in our lives, we have to be willing to bury something of our old selves. With a new youth pastor coming in, God is taking the group to a new place, and some things may change that we dont want to change, but if we are going where God is leading, we will have to let go.
