I think someone like Maxwell says that a title does not make you the leader. BEING the leader makes you the leader. My theory is to lead well and people follow and respect me. As far as respect etc, I believe that for students we need to be approachable. Having a title for some students makes us unapproachable and so I prefer students to call me by name. This is simply my opinion... The only time I use the 'Pastor' title is when I am trying to get free stuff!!! lol!

Most just call me Joe, some call me Pastor Joe. More parents call me Pastor Joe than do students. I do like the fact of teaching children the respect and calling our staff Pastor Dan, Pastor Ray, Pastor Joe etc...Children/students need to be taught respect as it appears they do not get it taught much anywhere else.

I'm not as much into the titles as some of the other guys have mentioned, but I have been contemplating the following idea:

We throw around the word Pastor and use it as a title, but the fact of the matter is that pastoring is a spiritual gift, as is leadership, evangelism, prophecy, teaching etc. So my big picture thought is why use a title if it isn't appropriate from a gifting standpoint. Otherwise, it really is nothing more than a title and has no meaning.

I don't hate titles -- I think they serve many helpful purposes. But compared to function, titles are really trivial. Whether you call me a youth pastor, youth leader, youth director, youth coordinator, whatever, it doesn't matter. The function is what matters -- serving the Lord by helping His teens grow in a relationship with Him.

I have to agree with both Joe and Brian on this one. It seems the tilte YP only really matters to the older crowd that grew up using them. The vast majority of my youth know me and refer to me as Ryan (or Ryno), which I honestly prefer more. By defult I'm refered to as Pastor Ryan on Sun. AM from the stage, but that's about it. I don't think having the title has ever made a lot of difference good or bad, so I don't really worry/think about it much.

In the end, I just concern myself with the individual relationship with the youth, parents and members of the church and try and not be concerned with the title they addressed me by.

I've been a pastor now for several years, but I don't use that title. I prefer my students to address me as Brian. The title is no where near important to me as the relationships I am building with my students. The only time my title as pastor has come into play is when I did a wedding for a former student two years ago.

I hate titles. My teenagers and parents call me Joe. I am no different than them so why should they refer to me differently. I don't believe title gives you authority or respect, I believe you earn it (which is not always easy with teenagers). Love them, show them respect and they will eventually return it!
