Study Scripture and pray. Don't make yourself unnecessarily busy. Be yourself. Lay out a vision for where you believe God wants your youth to be when they leave your ministry. Build on discipleship (choose a group of youth and adults that you can pour into, with the intent of them doing the same with others.) Set personal rules that you will live by to keep yourself beyond reproach (never alone with a girl that is not your wife, drinking or not drinking alcohol, etc.). Overly communicate so things are clear.

hopefully this was done in the interview process and it's a little trite but really....be yourself.....don't try to impress people by creating a new identity (because you're around people who don't know your history) that will set them up to expect from you later what you aren't going to be able/won't want to deliver.... just be who God made you to be

Pray & study scripture daily

Meet with your Sr Pastor weekly to update them on your progress, ask for guidance and advice

Buy and read "Your first two years in youth ministry" by Doug Fields

Start recruiting a solid volunteer base, meet with them frequently

Spend as much time as you can around the teens of your ministry, take them out for coffee, go to sports games, etc.

Build good relationships with the parents, start a monthly parent's newsletter, make time for them on Sunday mornings, before & after youth meetings etc.

Meet up with other youth pastors in the area,

Take time to rest. (There are times to go beyond, but don't set a pace you can't maintain in the long run)

Eat well and exercise. (Take care of yourself)

Absolutely agree with all the above. I would also add to create a schedule for yourself. You'll find your time can go many places - more than you can. Arrange to have X many hrs/wk for meetings, X many hrs/wk for students events, etc.

Also, pick up "Purpose Driven Youth Ministry" by Doug Fields, "Youth Ministry 3.0" by Mark Oestreicher and "The Youth worker's guide to helping teenagers in crisis" Von Pelt and Hancock

Build your support team first. It doesn't matter how awesome your structure is, or your programs, or your teachings, or any of those other elements. Without a team in place they won't work. Identify the core of who you want working with you, share your vision with them, and take it from there.
