YES it is necessary to have a large group format. Small groups you only get to know part of the students and do not see the full group. I am not much for multiple services (realize some churches do not have a choice {we run 270 ave}) but you do not know the rest of the body when you attend one service and they attend the other. Now if you are going for a church within a church then two services are a go I guess.

We have a small enough group that we do not do small groups, when we have been larger we have exercised small groups. Hope this answers your questions

I agree that it a vital component of my ministry. Not everyone will agree (obviously). I don't believe it is the only component but one that helps us to bring in students from the community, allows new students to the church to check us out, etc. No program can be built on just one program or piece of a program. We use large group, small groups and Sunday school to try to reach as many students as possible.

I am going to say it is needed. But each situation is different. Our mid-week large group meeting is effective and accomplishes the goals we set for it. This group is a group 125 to as high as 150. It is a high energy event and is meeting the needs for that group. I will admit that I miss the group the size of 8 that we rolled with a few years back...but we tailor it to the needs of the students in our community. So in our case...it is needed.

I'm actually thinking through this myself a bit and I'm not convinced that large-group meetings are a necessary component of youth ministry.

If you (or anyone else) is interested, I got some interesting feedback from Matt McAlack about this (who I think wouldn't mind me sharing). Matt was from our last YM talk regarding education in ministry. He raised some good points regarding a large group component in youth ministry.

when i was a kid, we broke from large group (20-30) to small groups in two seperate homes (10-15).
Did ministry happen? absolutely.
often, i find we become a slave to program rather seeing it an ends to a means. There is always going to be a huge push to "get back a program" because people are used to it; but so much can happen in small groups when you have the right people teaching.

Here's a cool model: Meet twice a month large group and twice a month small groups...

I'm gonna put mine here. We try to offer both large and small groups during the week. Our small groups meet once or twice during the week and we have large group on wednesdays. I wouldn't say that I would even prefer one over the other. I like to preach, I like to teach, and I like to listen, so we try to incorporate as much of all of the above into our minstry. I like wong's idea of having the 2x2 method.
